The University of Rostock is not only the oldest university in the Baltic Sea Region, but also the richest in tradition. At the same time the university is dedicated to shape the future as it is also indicated by its motto "Traditio et Innovatio".

Founded in 1419, it looks back on a longstanding history of teaching and research and celebrates this year its 600th anniversary. Offering more than 100 courses of study the University of Rostock is one of Germany’s Universities with the widest range of academic subjects. It features an interdisciplinary faculty (INF) in addition to the nine traditional ones. This faculty joins as central scientific facility researchers and students from all disciplines in currently four departments: “Life, Light and Matters”, “Maritime Systems”, “Ageing of Individual and Society” and “Knowledge - Culture - Transformation”. They emerged from the traditional strengths of the University and shape its profile.

Within its international orientation, the University of Rostock recognizes itself as particularly integrated in the Baltic Sea region and contributes to its ongoing development.
